Why should you go on a solo date?
Because how many times have you walked into a public place by yourself and you feel self-conscious, out of place, or like you need a buddy to survive the social interaction?
If it’s 9 times out of 10…then you need to get out of your comfort zone. Get comfortable with the UN-comfortable.
This helps you become more confident and grow into yourself because you know exactly who you are, what fulfills you, and what you need to be centered and at peace.
Don’t be afraid to do something new or invest in the hobbies you love because you don’t have a security blanket with you. Yes, have a girls’ night out and a date night with your boo every once in a while, but always make time to plan something special for yourself, too (she needs some tender love and care)!
Take the leap out of the nest and treat yourself to a date solely focused on nurturing your soul and simply making yourself happy without feeling the need to have additional company! #DateYourself
Road Trip
Get in your car and…DRIVE! Pop the top off (or open your sun roof) and just drive with no destination, just all of the good vibes.
It’s one of the most freeing things you can do and just be lost in your own little world of good music and fresh air.
Go wherever the road takes you and enjoy the beautiful sunshine outside!
Hiking
I’m going to be honest, here. I don’t do this often because of a recent knee situation but hiking would probably help strengthen it and make me feel like I’m doing some physical therapy (which I should be doing 2x/week anyhow smh…we’ll get there).
I previously lived by the mountains so it was fairly easy to find cool trails, but you can just as easily look up some local hiking trails in your area and pick one that suits your vibe for the day. You never what kind of trail you’ll find or what kind of views you’ll see. It’ll be amazing, regardless 🙂 .
Read a book at a Place With Scenic Views
Choose an old favorite or pick out a new read and it can be as simple as hanging out on your deck, going to the park, the beach…just go somewhere peaceful. It shouldn’t be too noisy so you can actually get into the book.
Set the scene so you can get lost in it (and maybe even read the whole thing in 2 hours, who cares?).
Unique Museum Visits or an Art Showing
As kids, we definitely take those random, school museum visits for granted and we really shouldn’t!
Museums are so overlooked and they’re not all just boring, historical stuff either (although I love a little trip through history sometimes).
Take a chance on an art museum, a museum of natural science, or even a tech museum. I went to the SONY Wonder Lab in NYC for my twelfth birthday (I think, all of the years kinda blur together lol) and it’s still one of my favorite birthday memories. It was like a tech museum/robotic arcade all-in-one (so dope for both kids and adults to experience)!
Also, if you’re looking to get inspired or check out local art, travel to an art showing in your area!
Down the block from my house, an artist opened up this FABULOUS new gallery with a bunch of graffiti art and eclectic pieces, so that is a definite must on my bucket list for this summer (because #SupportLocalBusinesses and you can never have enough art, right?)
Here’s some other cool museums around NY: Museum of Ice Cream, Museum of Illusions, MoMA, Sex Museum, Museum of Natural History.
Botanical Garden/ Butterfly Garden
Botanical gardens (and especially butterfly gardens) are a great way to focus on nature and the underrated beauty it has to offer (not to mention being emotionally relaxing). Many have gardens inside and outside and will allow you to bring food for a solo lunch date!
Also, botanical gardens offer educational, hands-on classes to teach you how to grow different plants, fruits, and vegetables so take the time to research your local botanical gardens to check out all of the activities they offer (and which ones you may find an interest in)!
Brunch With Bottomless Mimosas
Cheers to you!
Treat yourself to a girl’s brunch with…yourself! Order bottomless mimosas, chicken and waffles, and eat ‘til your heart’s content.
They say food is the key to man’s heart but that honestly may be true for women also (us girls like to grub, we don’t discriminate)!!
Spa Day
It could be as simple as applying a face mask and preparing a bubble bath (or bath bomb) or traveling to a spa to get pampered.
Treat yourself to a day and get the whole nine: mani pedi, sauna, facials, massages, and even throw in a glass of champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries for the Queen (aka YOU)!
Renew your energy and really focus on just making yourself feel and look beautiful!
Art/ Pottery Class
This is something that I’ve always wanted to get into!
I took pottery and clay making classes in high school and honestly…working with clay is so therapeutic. Even more so than journaling or coloring, not to mention the masterpieces you create and get to keep!
Dabble in the arts and be creative. You’ll have fun regardless if you want to make this a regularly scheduled hobby or not.
Side note: Check out this art kit that makes it simple to paint in the comfortability of your house! They even send the canvas, paintbrushes, and the video to follow along and get you started!
Volunteer
Dedicate your time to volunteer with an organization that’s important to you.
Volunteering is so rewarding and makes a difference in every person’s life that you help!
For me, I really want to volunteer with a domestic violence organization and just help as many women and families as possible. Due to losing my parents in a domestic violence situation, it just always felt like my calling to try to help more people affected by it.
Take a Cooking Class
Cooking classes are a great way to taste test a new dish that you probably wouldn’t have tried otherwise AND learn how to make it, also!
If you think about it, it’s a steal because there’s so much value in learning a new recipe AND you get a gourmet meal for a super low price (or lower than you would at a fancy restaurant lol).
Side note: Groupon offers a LOT of deals for cooking classes and you could essentially pay $20, for example, for a cooking lesson, free food, and meeting new people!
Start Gardening
Start with creating a little plant corner in your house (or just one plant if you don’t trust yourself to be consistent) and then move on to a larger area, such as a plot in the garden!
Figure out what types of plants you want in your house (and if you can keep up with the watering schedule for said plants) and research how to help them thrive. Gardening could become a new skill and passion for you!
Food Truck Festival
I don’t know about you guys but why is street food sooo freaking good?!! Like do they use special seasonings that only food trucks use because it’s always…*chef’s kiss*!
From handheld favorites to Caribbean cuisines, food trucks can deliver food catered to any of your tastes (you just have to find one that specializes in it)! Halal, birria tacos, burgers, Hawaiian food, you name it and there’s probably a f***ing delicious food truck for it!
Sometimes you can catch food trucks at your local farmer’s market or check out Facebook where you can occasionally find food truck events coming up, too!
Farmers’ Market
A farmers’ market is a good way to get to know local businesses as well as support them, find fresh produce, and other goodies for low prices!
They offer a fresh selection of seasonal fruits, vegetables, and other foods that are grown and made locally and/or organically! You get the opportunity to see what each person does differently, what kinds of foods are being grown in your area and have the knowledge of where your food is coming from!
There’s so many options who knows what you will find?
Go to a Concert
If you don’t mind big crowds, tailgating with quirky but friendly strangers, and music so loud your ear drums could pop then do yourself a favor and attend a concert or a festival (Governor’s Ball, Coachella, and Bonaroo… I’m coming for you post-COVID!!)!
Concerts and festivals are just filled with incredible energy loaded with good vibes (and good highs…if you know what I mean lol), great music, and mostly great people (because let’s be real, there are drunken a**holes no matter where you go).
It’s a designated place to enjoy live music by some of your favorite artists and to just vibe out and have a good time!
Fun fact: The first concert I ever went to was BY MYSELF and it was honestly one of the BEST experiences I’ve ever had (shout out to Nicki Minaj for making my first one for the books)! It was for my 21st birthday and I splurged and got front-row seats next to some of the best people who took me in and really made sure I had a great time with them. If you love meeting new people, this is for you!
Cycling or Yoga Class
Give yourself a body boost and try a new workout like cycling or yoga.
These are normally taught in groups and open sessions at local gyms so just stop in and ask for a schedule of their classes to try one out (or look it up on their gym’s website)!
Take it a step further and take a crack at goat yoga (at least once)! Workout and cuddle/get attacked by a baby goat…what more could a girl ask for?
Retail Therapy
If diamonds are a girl’s best friend, then shopping is a girl’s best pastime (haha no joke).
Online shop or take a trip to all of your favorite stores and just SPLURGE!! Show yourself a good time and even try on some of the clothes you want to buy (playing a little dress up is always fun)!
Nothing Wrong with a Good Dinner & a Movie
I repeat, nothing is wrong with a good dinner and a movie. Reserve a table for 1 at your favorite restaurant and catch a movie at one of those theaters with the reclining seats (or do all movie theaters have this now?)
If you’re a homebody, you can stay in, order your favorite takeout, and watch a movie on Netlfix, on Demand, etc. Just relax and unwind, sis!
TAKE A PLANE TO ANOTHER COUNTRY
DO IT! DON’T THINK ABOUT IT, JUST DO IT (I don’t mean to scream but hope you get my point 🙂 ).
The opportunities for growth, self-love, self-confidence, and independence are especially abundant when you’re able to take that leap and travel somewhere alone.
Of course, it’s nerve-wracking and can make you feel lonely but that’s the point!
Push yourself completely out of your comfort zone and explore your boundaries. You won’t know how far you can go until you push past the limits you’ve set up for yourself (don’t keep that bar low sis, you can do whatever you put your mind to).
Meet new people, try new foods, do something you thought you would never do on your own! Surprise yourself and boost your ego as you become more of the independent, cultured woman you want and know you can be all ON YOUR OWN!
What’s something you’ve always wanted to do but never had the guts to do by yourself?
