Ladies, we’re young! We’re millennials and have so much life to live in little time (or at least that’s how it seems). We’re trying to build our careers, attend school, oh and also make time for a social life!
Life moves quick and all you need is more time to do everything we want without worrying about cooking, too.
Well, meal delivery services like HelloFresh does exactly that. It removes the stress of cooking by making meal planning a breeze! Essentially, HelloFresh gives you more time to focus on the other things that matter the most to you!
HelloFresh is a meal delivery service that makes cooking less of a chore especially when you have just moved out on your own and/or have never cooked for yourself before (there’s a first time for everything, girl).
My boyfriend and I have been using HelloFresh consistently since we moved into our new house about 8 months ago! Our current meal plan is 3 meals/week, which is really our dinners for the weekdays. We either cook our own meals, order out, or eat dinner with Mike’s family on the other days.
Adjust your meal frequency to your liking and order up to 6 meals per week, cutting out the grocery middle man altogether!
HelloFresh’s recipes make it super simple for anyone to follow (including newly budding chefs) and allows for a more balanced nutrition. Here’s my candid review of Hello Fresh based on 5 essential things: price, convenience, portion size, variety, and food quality.
- Price: 5/5
Compared to ordering out for two people, HelloFresh is INSANELY cheap! On average, when Mike and I go to the grocery store, we spend between $200-$300 in one trip. Sometimes we don’t have a chance to cook everything without some of it going bad so that’s money DOWN THE DRAIN!
Also, when we order out, our meals cost about $60-$70 combined (damn you, taxes and delivery fees). Now, with HelloFresh, our weekly order of 3 meals costs us $60!
So…would you rather $300 for food you may not eat or $60 for definite food you will eat? $60 for one meal or $60 for three meals? I’ll take $60 for 3 meals any day!
To break this down even more for you, it’s $60 for 3 meals (including the $7.99 shipping fee. The costs per serving is $5.99-$8.99 depending on if you choose a gourmet meal or not. Gourmet meals are a little pricier but hey, you get what you pay for :).
So, if you ever wanted to change the serving size for 2 extra guests you’re having over, you can change a meal to have enough servings for 4 people.
- Convenience: 5/5
Now, the convenience of Hello Fresh is on a different level!
HelloFresh allows you to pick any day of the week that you want your food delivered. You can also change your delivery day at ANY TIME during your subscription! If you’re home a certain day and don’t want your food sitting outside (it’s refrigerated so no worries if you’re not home), you can always switch it another day. As long as you make the change BEFORE your order is being prepared for shipping you’re good to go!
Bonus: You can skip a week of meals if you are going on vacation or just don’t want food that week!
Also, HelloFresh lets you pick your meals up to a month in advance and continuously change them! This takes meal planning up a notch because you don’t have to stress every week about meal planning. Oh, and all of the ingredients are sent to you (except butter, oil, salt, and pepper). You can plan your meals for the next month and just wait on those deliveries!
Lastly, when talking about convenience, we want our meals to be quicker not longer, right? Well, these meals take about 30-45 minutes at most! I haven’t had a meal from Hello Fresh yet that took me a whole hour to prep and cook!
- Portion Size: 3.5/5
If you’re a huge foodie then HelloFresh is for you taste-wise but not for you portion-wise.
Hello Fresh can definitely be used as a portion control tool to curb overeating. But I have found that some of the meals don’t keep me and my hungry man satisfied.
Also, there’s not much for leftovers which is a blessing in disguise because you either eat your leftovers or they sit in the fridge untouched. There is no in-between (sorry still struggling to adult over here).
I’m not going to lie, we eat and we eat A LOT! In a perfect dream world, I would be a food critic for a living but that would just be another excuse to eat and girl…we don’t need ANY MORE excuses!
If you’re looking for huge meals, you’re not going to get that with HelloFresh but you may lose weight from eating WAY less than you normally would!
- Variety: 4/5
HelloFresh has definitely opened the world for me to try new things and to cook new types of food! I swear half the meals I made with HelloFresh I would’ve never made in my life (I’m an adventurous eater but I’m a cautious chef lol).
Instead of simply making plain ol’ grilled chicken and rice (ugh boring), there’s options like. Sweet Chili Pork Bowls with bell Peppers and peanuts (yes, it’s all as good as it sounds)!
I like that I have the option between vegetarian, low-calorie, quick meals, or just a mixture of them all. HelloFresh has about 20 different options you can choose from every week so you never have to have the same meal twice!
If you like to switch things up and keep exploring different foods then this is great! Also, if there’s something you wanted to try before and miss it one week, don’t worry because it’ll pop back up at a later date.
The only downsides are that you may not know when that meal will come again or it may be a popular option every few weeks so you’ll see it more. This can be bad depending on how much variety you want (I like as many options as possible although I can never decide anyway).
- Quality: 4/5
HelloFresh’s ingredients come fresh and are packaged with ice packs all around to keep your food chilled during transport and while sitting outside.
Even though they do come fresh, if the meals aren’t eaten within 3 days they tend to rot pretty quickly.
I recommend that you cook the meals ordered that week within 7 days, refrigerate your produce, and freeze the meat. Refrigerating the produce and freezing the meat sent to you helps retain the freshness and quality of your meals!
Overall Satisfaction Rating: GREAT BANG FOR YOUR BUCK (4.3/5)
I can only be honest when I say that every Hello Fresh meal that I’ve made has tasted AMAZING
The price is right, the quality is there, and the convenience factor is through the roof! Your choice of meals is entirely up to you so if you don’t like certain ingredients you can change your meal to something that fits your taste better (aka if you don’t like a meal with shrimp, you can order something else with chicken)!
